Review

I haven’t been able to read books in the last few months due to personal circumstances in my life. But there is nothing like a good DB Rook, book to hook you back into the world of reading, and damn did he not disappoint.

DB Rook is back and has bodly stepped into the world of Sci-fi, and it’s absolutely fantastic. Residuum is a novella from what looks to be a future series release A Darkening Dawn. And if the series is anything like this visceral dark short beauty, I can’t wait.

Residuum reminds me of a mash up between Gaurdians of the Galaxy and The Terminator, where the good guys versus robots programed to wipe out the human population across the galaxy. For the authors’ first time writing sci-fi, it shows that he is a master of his craftsmanship.

I love DB Rooks writing, with each book he releases, they go from strength to strength. His prose are wonderful to digest. His world-building and setting are brilliant. From start to finish, you are hooked and drawn into a dark tale that fills you with chills. Residuum is fast-paced, action-packed, and beautifully character driven.

What i loved about this story is that it’s really dark and that the author is able to mix in hilarious and humorous moments when things are looking very bleak for the characters. My favourite characters were Tapedeck and Shadwell, a robotic hero and an Insectoid limb ripper, and the other characters are just as lovable.

In this story, DB Rook throws you straight into a massacre. Our main protagonist, Charlus, and her mother, Merrian, are on the run after night of terror from the black bots sent into terminate the human population. Deposited on a strange planet, they are running blind into chaos and only have each other. With kept secrets and betrayal, will they survive from being hunted down. Only time will tell.

If you haven’t read or checked out DB Rooks books or Novellas. His Callus and Crow book from The Wayward World Chronicles is excellent, a fantasy dystopian dark tale full of goodness. I very highly recommend for all fantasy lovers…😁🔥🔥🔥

Synopsis

A fantasy epic of freedom and empire, gods and monsters, love, loyalty, honour, and betrayal, from the acclaimed author of GODBLIND.

For generations, the forests of Ixachipan have echoed with the clash of weapons, as nation after nation has fallen to the Empire of Songs – and to the unending, magical music that binds its people together. Now, only two free tribes remain.

The Empire is not their only enemy. Monstrous, scaled predators lurk in rivers and streams, with a deadly music of their own.

As battle looms, fighters on both sides must decide how far they will go for their beliefs and for the ones they love – a veteran general seeks peace through war, a warrior and a shaman set out to understand their enemies, and an ambitious noble tries to bend ancient magic to her will.

Review

Holy Setatmeh, that was absolutely brilliant. Anna Stephens has done again with this incredible first book in her latest trilogy. The Godblind Trilogy is one of my favourite of all time. And damn has she delivered in this amazing new world she has created for us grimdark fans to drown ourselves in her grimalicious storytelling.

The Stone Knife is the first book in The Songs of The Drowned Trilogy, and from the very first pages, the author drags you into its depths with her intriguing and diverse set of characters as they struggle to survive monsters, war and an Empire looking to devour all in its song.

The story is action-packed with bloody scenes, and there are plenty of dark and gruesome moments that fans of Godblind have no doubt come to expect from one of Grimdarks’ favourite Queens of fantasy.

Anna Stephens imagination that has gone into the world-building here is absolutely astonishing. The jungle setting is excellent, and if you close your eyes, you can hear and feel all its vibrancy. This story gives me Mel Gibsons Apocalypto feels to it, but with monsters thrown into the mix, and I can’t wait to see what happens in book two.

The continent of Ixachipan has been at war for generations. Its main benefactors, the Empire of Songs, are looking to devour all with in its magical source, and their Gods the holy Setatmeh to bring peace across the land there must be war, slavery and sacrifices to achieve its goal.

But there are two tribes still to brought under control. The Tokobans and the Yalotlans and the Song is coming for them. Not only have they fought Monstrous, scaled creatures that lurk in rivers and streams that kill the elderly and children. They must fight for their way of life, their land, and their identity. War is coming and It’s going to get bloody, and y’all best be ready when it does.

A very brutal, unsettling, and utterly immersive fantasy that will have you begging for more. If you haven’t read anything by Anna Stephens yet. I very highly recommend that you do, you won’t be disappointed.

Review

Brilliant, this was one of my most anticipated waits for a new Riyria book, and damn Michael J.Sullivan never disappoints. My favourite duo, Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater, are back with bang in a new epic adventure, and it’s fantastic like meeting up with very old friends after a long time.

Drumindor is the fifth book in the Riyria Chronicles series. What I absolutely love about these books is that they are so much fun to read. They can make you laugh and cry, and the humorous interactions throughout the book are really wonderful.

Everything the author writes turns to gold. The way in which Michael J. Sullivan is able to keep you glued to your seat throughout each book is amazing. Not to mention, the attachment he is able to build between the reader and the characters, it really is truly incredible. The worldbuilding and setting are amazing, and to keep coming up with brilliant plot after plot is a credit to his literary masterclass.

Beautifully written new and old characters that you will love, plenty of surprises, humour and twists, and turns that will keep you hooked from the start right up to the last page. With each book and series set in this world, it is like a jigsaw puzzle. When it comes together, it’s really amazing and mind-blowing.

In this latest book, we travel the city of Tur Del Fur, which sits on the steep coast next to Drumindor. Drumindor is an ancient structure built by the dwarves to keep a lid on a volcano from ever erupting. But when a disgruntled dwarf Gravis Berling is let go from his position in Drumindor. Haltveldt is a nation built on bloodshed. With the Order of Sparkers brought to heel, Emperor Locke wields his mages – and their magic the Spark – like a weapon as he wages a war of genocide.

But the enemies of his empire multiply.

In the almost-forgotten north, the ancient citadel of Solitude, filled with two-hundred exiled Sparkers, watches over the mysterious Banished. With a new apprentice under her wing, Zanna Alpenwood pines for her estranged daughter when everything changes – for the first time in centuries, The Banished are on the move.

Miles away in Haltveldt’s southern frontlines, Calene Alpenwood makes a startling discovery in the most unlikely of places and her estrangement from her mother is tested. As is her faith in the Order of Sparkers and loyalty to the Empire.

And in Haltveldt’s capital, Kade Besem – whose son Arlo is training with Zanna – scrambles to react to the events at Solitude in a den of vipers.

Haltveldt is an empire forged in fire and nothing is at it seems. But one thing is certain: with the Banished returning, and the elves to the south on the brink of annihilation, Zanna, Calene and Kade stand on the brink of earth-shattering change.

A great game, millennia in the making, is coming to its stunning conclusion. Who will survive? And who is the true enemy of Haltveldt? ‘In Solitude’s Shadow: Extended Edition’ – now with all new chapters, expanded scenes and including the prequel ‘Before The Shadow’, reveals all…

The magic of ‘The Wheel of Time’ meets the grittiness of ‘The Witcher’ in this fast-paced series starter!

Review

Wow, this book just gets better and better with every reread, especially now that author David Green has revamped, added new chapters, a complete rewrite of the story you know, told better than ever.

We get more from our favourite characters, Calene, more Brina, more Kade, more Zanna, more Tilo… And even some characters you might not expect and just bloody fantastic.

In Solitude’s Shadow is the first book from the Ruin Of Empire four book series, and it was even Droken Bloody better the third time round. I look forward to seeing what he has done with the next books in the series. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the finished original series. But David Green has just added a beautiful touch of finesse to an already amazing series.

Holy moly, the magical battles and pure scale of magic in this book is unbelievable that at its highest that would cause a cataclysm of mass destruction, to give life or to snuff life with absolutely devastating affect. David Greens, worldbuilding is fantastic. The plot and story will have you enthralled from start to finish, it’s action-packed very fast-paced, and the cast of diverse characters are excellent.

In book one, In Solitude’s Shadow, the first people known as the banished have returned after two thousand years in their hundreds of thousands, with Solitude as their only obstacle to reaching the main land. Weather their intentions are to invade or they’ve been driven from their mountain home.

Solitude’s residents known as The Sparkers have been left to defend for themselves by their Emperor as he continues his war to eradicate all elves once and for all. War is coming to Haltveldt like no one has ever seen. Dark magic is seeping from everywhere and all magic weilders best be or on their guard or be sparked out for good.

Everything I’ve read by David Green so far has been a pleasure. His storytelling truly is excellent. If you love epic fantasy, then I really highly recommend..😁🪓💙

The unseen realms have awoken and within them, ancient feuds flare to life.

A new and deadly threat looms, and an old bargain will be struck anew. Will Lidan and Ran survive the coming storm to finish what they have begun?

Empire of Shadows is the stunning conclusion to the epic Coraidic Sagas trilogy.

Review

Damn what an epic journey and conclusion to an amazing trilogy. You could feel and see that author Alicia Wanstall-Burke has sacrificed blood, tears and poured her heart and soul into bringing this wonderful grimalicious tale to fruition, and what a way to start my reading adventure for 2025 with a bang.

Empire of Shadows is the third and final instalment in The Coraidic Sagas series. After finishing, I hope the author returns to this world one day or whatever new world she creates, I look forward to seeing what she brings us next.

Empire of Shadows is a tale of sacrifice, love, heartbreak and vengeance. I love the way the two story lines of our two main protagonists, Lidan and Ranoth merge together, finally joining forces to fight and find the architect who has created an evil by using dark magic that has plagued both sides of the Woadan Empire.

The author gives us an in-depth look at some of the other characters’ story arcs. Selen, Lidan’s mother, we get to see more of her background and where she originated from and how she came to be head wife of the Tolak Clan of the southlands, and wow its one hell of twist that will bring tears.

This story is full of surprises and twists that will leave you flabbergasted. There are a nice few little Easter eggs in there that made me smile. If you’re looking for a trilogy that will captivate your mind from the very start, then you will love this. It’s fast-paced, action-packed, full-on blood curdling stabby action. Monsters that would give you nightmares, gods interfering and pulling strings to sate to own ends and characters that you will love and hate that will leave you with very mixed emotions.

As the story continues, Lidan, Ranoth, and their companions treck across the Woadan Empire, hunting their quarry that will lead them into dangers unmanageable. But not all as it seems as higher beings throw themselves into the mix, pitting the two groups against each other. One is looking for blood and sacrifice, and the other is looking for balancing the world to rights.

Can Lidan and Ranoth stop the wheel that was set in motion twenty years prior by dark magic and put an end to who created it in the first place, who’s looking to create more monsters that could bring devastating consequences to the Woadan Empire. Will they prevail or die trying, only the gods know.

To all who love fantasy. I implore you checking out The Coraidic Sagas. You will laugh and cry, and it’s truly wonderful storytelling that everyone should experience. I can’t highly recommend this amazing series enough, so what are you waiting for. Happy reading for 2025.

Review

Wow, this series just gets better and better. It’s one of those books where such an unexpected twist happens right at the end and just blows your mind, and it left me reeling that i leapt straight into the third book to kill my anticipation. Well played, Mrs Wanstall-Burke well played.

Legacy Of Ghosts is the second instalment in The Coraidic Sagas. Legacy of Ghosts sees us move four years beyond the events of the first book Blood of Heirs, and it moves at a faster pace and is action-packed to the hilt.

In this book, the author introduces us to more of the world she has created for us fantasy fans to get lost in. It’s dark, grim, bloody, and it’s just wonderful. The plot is knitting beautifully together, and I can’t wait to see where I end up in book three Empire of Shadows after that ending.

We learn more about some of the interesting creatures that inhabit it, Ice Dragon’s and including some interesting revelations regarding the monsters that plagued both sets of characters in the first book. Weapon wielding zombies, the Ngaru created by dark magic that are relentless and very hard to kill would be anyone’s nightmare.

The story weaves beautifully, the worldbuilding is excellent, and characters are absolutely brilliant. What I loved is when finally our two main protagonists’ worlds collide, two hot heads, Lidan a young woman becoming a feisty and lethal warrior and Ranoth a young prince and magic weilder from two very different backgrounds.

After the ending of the first book and four years later, Lidan’s clan is at war with a rival clan, and it’s getting bloody, but Lidans’ world is about to change forever when her father finally has a son and new heir. Lidan just wants a simple life, and to be a warrior, she is given the task of being the protector to the new heir and will give her life gladly to protect him, her brother if she has to.

Ranoth has fled his old life and is on run hiding from his father. To be a magic weilder is a death sentence. Ranoth has found a new home in hidden magic school for those who are hiding from the Empire. After four years the school is attacked by the monstrous Ngaru. After barely surviving. Ranoth leads an expedition to find who created these monsters and bring them to justice.

Just brilliant storytelling at its very finest. If you haven’t checked out this amazing series by Alicia Wanstall-Burke, then I very highly recommend that you remedy that right now, you won’t regret it…😁🏹⚔🗡💀

Review

I am ashamed of myself, that I took so long to get around to read Blood Of Heirs, an SPFBO5 Finalist, and very well deserved because it is an absolutely fantastic debut. It is an excellent fast-paced and entertaining read. It’s a finished trilogy, and it will be one I’ll be devouring over the next week or so.

Blood of Heirs is first in the trilogy The Coraidic Sagas by Alicia Wanstall-Burke. The author has woven a wonderful story together of two main characters, Ranoth, a noble son of a Duke, and Lidan, the eldest daughter of a clan chief. Her character development of these two individuals is brilliant. Both are young characters, and the trials and tribulations the author puts them through are bloody awesome as they they grow and develop throughout the book.

I absolutely love Alicia Wanstall-Burkes writing. The story flows beautifully, and her prose is exquisite and has quite an addictive quality to it. Once I’d started reading It was very hard to put the book down.

The worldbuilding and setting are brilliant, giving us a very dark feeling throughout as the characters are plagued by dead monstrous mutated beings hunting and killing. The book has a little bit of everything. It’s action-packed, clan warfare, bloody battles, political intrigue, and magic, which is a death sentence to all who those who weild it.

In this book, The Dukes army has been overrun. With eminent defeat insight, his father orders Ranoth to be escorted home for his safety. On the run, Ranoth and his escort discover a house abandoned, looking for shelter. But they discover something more evil and death within, triggering something inside Ranoth that has been lying dormant. His life is about to change forever.

Lidan is the Clan Chiefs’ eldest daughter and heir. But for how long, only a chiefs eldest son can be heir by law, and her father only has girls until one of his wives gives him a son. Lidans’ mother is head wife and will do anything to keep her position with political backstabbing, magic, and murder if necessary. With war eminent between the clans over an insult. Lidan must prove she is ready to become who she was meant to be and against her mother’s wishes. A Ranger.

Fantastic storytelling, it’s so good, I’m halfway through book 2 already. If you are looking for something and exciting to read. Check out Alicia’s Wanstall-Burke The Coraidic Sagas. I highly recommend….🗡🏹🗡😁

Review

That there, my fellow fantasy readers, was one of the most astounding conclusions to one of the most epic trilogies I have ever read and my absolute favourite from the master himself, John Gwynne. It’s just brilliant from start to finish, and I’ll be sad to leave Vigrid behind until I pick it up again sometime in the future.

Fury of the Gods is the third and final book in this grimalicious tale of Norse Godly goodness. Everything John Gwynne writes just turns to gold entertainment, and I can’t wait to see what he brings us next in the future.

Throughout this series, I laughed, cried, and stood in endless shield walls and battled with the amazing Bloodsworn. Met some amazing characters, fantastic creatures, and damn those gods were just monstrous and phenomenal.

As always, the authors’ attention to detail of battle is just so epic, the blood curdling scenes send your mind spinning with its pace and ferocity. The worldbuilding and setting are brilliant. It’s so gripping, compelling, and intense that it hooks you beautifully. It’s fast-paced and action-packed to the hilt with gore bloody goodness.

If you are into thoroughly entertaining fantasy, epic adventures, evil villains, fantastic mismatched characters full of witty dialogue, dragon gods, wolf gods, rat gods, dark magic, political intrigue. Then you will love this one from the author who brought us the amazing epics series The Faithful and the Fallen and Of Blood and Bone. P.S. If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for.

Is this tantalising tale the Fury the Gods is about to come to a head, as the final battle looms, two sides will clash in an earth-shattering showdown between warring gods and human foe alike.

Will Lik-Rifa the Dragon God get revenge on her brother Ulfir the Wolf God for chaining 300 years ago. With her army of tainted, monsters and human allies, can she finally rule Vigrid once and for all. Let the battle commence.

This trilogy is for readers who enjoy and love grimdark. Very highly recommended.

Synopsis

A gender-flipped Die Hard set in a mysterious castle, Cameron Johnston’s The Last Shield is an engaging fantasy read, perfect for fans of John Gwynne and Mark Lawrence.

The ancient forest realm of Sunweald is bordered on two sides by far mightier nations – a precarious situation. At its centre, the Sunweald Palace is home to the Lord Regent and the heir to the throne, together with numerous precious and powerful artefacts. The Palace is protected by the realm’s elite Shields, dedicated to guarding the royal line against all foes.

A group of vicious brigands called the Wildwood Reivers have been stealing arcane artefacts and smuggling them across the borders, out of Sunweald. And the objects they most desire are stored in the mystical Wyrm Vault, hidden away deep in the bones of the earth, within the walls of the Palace itself.

As political and religious tensions mount, Sunweald’s druids prepare to enact rituals for the Summer Solstice – but the Wildwood Reivers and their treacherous allies have other plans. It falls to Briar, the commander of the Shields, to defend the ancient corridors and secret tunnels of the Palace. The odds may be against her, but she’ll see every enemy head adorning a spike or she’ll die trying…

Review

Boom, Cameron Johnston is back with a bang, and damn this book has just left me with the biggest grin after that beautiful brutal bloody ending. After reading his amazing duolgy, The Age of Tyranny and his standalone Maleficent Seven, I knew I was in for a treat with this new trail blazer of read, and oh my it did not disappoint, it was shield bashingly epic.

The Last Shield is also a standalone novel. For such a short book, it is action-packed throughout the book, and it is relentless and wildly entertaining. It’s grim, gruesome, and extremely violent, and the plot is just exquisitely wonderful. Cameron Johnston is a master of his craft, and The Last Shield just left me in awe of his literary brilliance.

When reading this book, it brought me back and left me all nostalgic thinking of all my favourite 80s action hero movies, with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Silvester Stalone or Bruce Willis, a one man army against all the odds and in this book the author beautifully switches it up introducing me to one of my favourite protagonist of the year a middle aged woman, Briar shield commander of the ancient forest realm of Sunweald and she is an absolute beast.

What I absolutely loved was the camaraderie between Briar and the Lord Regent Alaric, and soon to be king Kester. It was a good humoured fun read in a bloody grimalicious setting, and I just could not get enough.

If you are a fan of grimdark books in the vain of Mark Lawrence, John Gwynne, Anna Smith Spark or Michael R Fletcher, then Cameron Johnston’s, The Last Shield will be right up your street, lots of unsavoury characters that you can’t wait to see their heads graciously stuck at the end of a pike.

In this classic, our main protagonist, Briar, is left badly injured after taking a poisoned arrow in the leg, protecting the Lord Regent at summer solstice when set upon by assassins. On the brink of death, Briars injury has left her a shell of her former self, who was strong, hard, fast, and brutal with her shield and sword, is now bed ridden and needs a walking stick.

Briar is pig headed and determined to get back to who she is and loves the Shield Commander of Sunweald. Her second in command, Hardgrim, is pulling all the strings while in recovery. The castle is over run with assassins, brigands and treachery. Can Briar become the killer she once was and bring retribution to those who would attack her home, her lord Regent, and the people of Sunweald. Let the games begin, swing swing, bash bash.

That was one of my favourite books of year, hands down, just brilliant and one of those tales that will stay with me for a very long time. If you haven’t read any of Cameron Johnston books yet, I very highly recommend that you do….😁🗡🏹🪓🛡

THE DEAD GODS ARE RISING.

Lik-Rifa, the dragon god of legend, has been freed from her eternal prison. Now she plots a new age of blood and conquest.

As Orka continues the hunt for her missing son, the Bloodsworn sweep south in a desperate race to save one of their own–and Varg takes the first steps on the path of vengeance.

Elvar has sworn to fulfil her blood oath and rescue a prisoner from the clutches of Lik-Rifa and her dragonborn followers, but first she must persuade the Battle-Grim to follow her. Yet even the might of the Bloodsworn and Battle-Grim cannot stand alone against a dragon god.

Their only hope lies within the mad writings of a chained god. A book of forbidden magic with the power to raise the wolf god Ulfrir from the dead…and bring about a battle that will shake the foundations of the earth.

Review

Wow, this trilogy just gets better and better. It’s absolutely jaw-dropping. John Gwynne is a master at crafting believable characters and enthralling worlds. His first two series were amazing, but the Bloodsworn Saga is now my favourite from his work, and I now know why he is one of my favourite authors of fantasy ever.

The Hunger of the Gods is the second instalment from his newest and latest trilogy. I know, I know it’s a finished trilogy, and I’m late to the party, I can now recognise why fantasy fans absolutely adore and love his writing. He creates beautiful dark worlds for us to get lost in among the pages. I’m already halfway through the last book, and John Gwynne, Sir, I salute you.

What I so love about this series is that it is absolutely relentless with blood curdling battle scenes. Whether against monsters, tainted or human foe, and I bloody love it. John Gwynne cleaves and slices through his characters like the Grim Reaper. I’m terrified of turning the next page, not knowing what’s in store for my favourite characters.

The way the author can pull you with his story weaving and attention to detail is so good and damn does he create amazing characters, whether you love them or you hate them and I for one can’t wait to see some deplorable characters get their come upons very brutally.

The worldbuilding and setting are brilliant. It’s so gripping, compelling, and intense that it hooks you like an axe. It’s fast-paced and action-packed to the hilt with gore bloody goodness. If you are a fan of Norse mythology or just love epic fantasy, check out this roller coaster of read of non-stop entertainment.

The Gods have returned after three hundred years of absence. A lot has changed since they ruled. Their children tainted with their blood are now thralled and chained to the new rulers of Vigrid. Except for one group of exceptional mercenaries, the blood sworn.

Lik-Rifa, the dragon god, has vowed to become queen again of all Vigrid, bringing her horde of dragon born tainted, monsters and her children to hunt down all those who opposes her. But her brother, the Wolf God, is also free, and with the Battle Grim holding the stakes. War is coming to Vigrid, and it’s going to be glorious.

If you haven’t checked out any of John Gwynnes books yet, I very highly recommend that you do, you will not regret it…😁🐲🔥💀🪓🗡
